Welcome to Thramer Rods!

Thramer Signature series

These are Thramer proprietary tapers which have been specifically designed by AJ Thramer himself. They are all versatile medium actions rods well adapted for dry fly and nymphing.

We build these in flamed or blonde cane, available with blued nickel silver slide band or aluminum screw lock hardware. We use a half wells grip, along with an agate stripping guide.

Welcome to Thramer Rods!

Classic Taper series

This carefully researched series of rods was AJ's response to the ever dwindling and aging supply of rods from the Golden Era. Not simply 'internet' tapers, each rod has been carefully researched and vetted to insure the feel of the original. We have found each maker had a 'key' or specific characteristic in his rod's construction; the inclusion of that characteristic is essential to reproducing the feel of the original rod.

Following the all important work on the tapering and ferruling of each model, it is then finished out to be cosmetically similar, but not identical, to the original.

Notes on each maker are being updated, click on each name for our description.

Thramer Signature Series - nomenclature

Designed and refined over the last 40 years, the Thramer Signature series have answered the calls of anglers worldwide. The design codes are as follows"

The base code is a single letter, such as "P". If there is an "x" following, than it is a faster version of the taper. If there is an "SB" following the base code, then the rod has a swelled butt. If the is an "H" in front of the code, then the taper has been modified to be a hollowbuilt. So if we have a "HDxSB", then this rod is a hollow (H) built "D" taper that is faster version of the original (x) and has a swelled butt (SB).

P Series

These rods were the first set of tapers AJ designed circa 1980. They are a full working modern wet fly style of taper. They have plenty of power but are full flexing.

Px Series

These were the second set of tapers AJ designed, circa 1983. They were a modification of the P series at the request of local steelhead fisherman. They offer more power throughout the rod and have been used by hundreds and hundreds of steelhead anglers since. They have since found a niche as streamer, lake, bass and salmon rods. If you are looking for a rod to handle the 10 pounders we find in Oregon's high lakes, fight the Montanan or Deschutes canyon winds, or you are heading to Alaska, then this is the series designed for you,

DX Series

This was the third set of tapers AJ designed circa 1988 (They year McKenzie was born!). Initially they were designed to help people make the transition from graphite to cane easier for new to bamboo anglers. But they quickly outgrew their initial purpose and have proven themselves almost a thousand times as friendly. They are easy to cast, adaptable medium fast dry fly rods. This is by far our most popular taper as they easily transition from working tiny dries to moderate nymphying to small streamers and terrestrials.

Non Hollowbuilt rods are $1500 and Hollowbuilt are $1650
