An almost impossible task to adequately cover in a short introduction due to the long and storied history of the Leonard company. Out of Leonard so many of the great Eastern makers were birthed. Payne, F.E. Thomas, Edwards, Hawes - all directly tie to Leonard, probably others that do not come to mind.
AJ Thramer and Son Rod Co confines ourselves to the modern post fire and Maxwell era. First, the post fire rods.
Blond cane and usually bright wraps are what is thought of in the post fire era. Not a solid rule, but it is a general truth when the Leonard rod images spring to mind.
First, we will discuss the biggest challenge in offering these tapers. They were terribly inconsistent in taper within a model range. A longtime rod dealer, who is no longer with us. lived from the brick and mortar era to the grand era of the mailed rod catalogues and ending up in the digital era, Leonard was a topic in many of this dealer and AJ's conversations. This dealer used to go to the Leonard shop every season to personally cast the rods available to select those which would be good casing for his customers. There was simply too much variability within each model to order, each rod had to be personally vetted by this dealer.
As a result, AJ's quest was for the "good" Leonard tapers. AJ ended up finding a long time lover and user of Leonard rods to individually vet each taper. Our limited listing reflects the time it tool to remake a model several times, shipping it back and forth, until we received the thumbs up as a representation of the best of the best in each taper designation. Except as noted, these are the tapers offered.
We think it can be a point of agreement that Maxwell era was a new dawn for the bamboo rod. Superior quality control and unparalleled cosmetics brought about a new paradigm for the new idea of the time, rod building as an art. Before this era, a bamboo was simply a tool. The utility was more important than the visual, in a strict sense. This elevated the game that would lead to what we have nor, a plethora of superior rods with superior cosmetic details available from a wide variety of current makers.
Cosmetics available: The classic red wrap, the Maxwell era transparent red wrap and the transparent tan wrap.
